The Department of Conservation (DOC) has set a rule of no children under the age of 10 – this is for various safety reasons (for example risk of hypothermia) and because the lodges/accommodations are not set up for children – they are very strict with how they operate the track. You will need to get special permission from DOC to bring children under the age of 10.

You’ll be required to carry a pack large enough to fit your rain gear, clothes and warm layers, camera, snacks, water (1-2 litres) and any other personal items you wish to take with you. So it’s only as heavy as you make it, you won’t need to worry about a sleeping bag or bed linen, food, etc. as all that stuff will be flown in and waiting for you at the huts along the track. You’ll all be walking together but you can certainly go at your own pace.

Alternatively you could consider hiking a portion of the Milford Track. Here in New Zealand there are over 500 beautiful hiking trails, so if you’re keen to tick off a few different trails during your visit you could join a multi-day guided hiking tour such as those offered by Active Adventures or New Zealand Walking Tours. Active Adventures offers the opportunity to hike the Milford Track in its entirety, whilst both companies have trips that include a portion of the trail.
If you’d prefer to hike the trail independently without a guide, you’ll need to arrange this through the Department of Conservation.
